LIB DEM LEADER SHOWS SUPPORT FOR LOCAL POST OFFICES
On a visit to West Worcestershire yesterday, Ming Campbell Leader of the Liberal
Democrats criticised the outcome of a consultation process by the Government
which may see up to 70 Post Offices relocated into branches of WH Smith.
Visiting Alfrick Post Office and Stores in West Worcestershire, Ming Campbell
said:
“I have asked for a meeting with the management of the Post Office to see if
there is another way forward for the staff at branches up and down the country.
Unfortunately though, it seems that some redundancy notices have already been
issued.
“All Post Offices are important, and I hope that any debate which is conducted
will not come down to a choice between urban or rural services, as all Post
Offices are vital to their local communities.”
Richard Burt, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for West
Worcestershire, who was accompanying Sir Ming on his visit to the area added:
“Many residents in West Worcestershire are concerned about the future of the
Post Office network. We have already seen the closure of five branches in the
area in recent years.
“The Government’s announcement amounts to privatisation via the back door and
will only further degrade the Post Office network and cause further worry for
those in rural areas.
Liberal Democrats in West Worcestershire will continue to argue for a strong
Post Office network as a vital asset to rural communities.”
